Cool thanks for sharing. I wasn't able to make it this year because I had already spent a fortune at ATS.

I'll post a link to my photos soon. Unfortunately, I left my camera at Matthew's house when I went there before I left town and I have to wait until it is shipped to me. Until then, you can read my little diary at http://www.exoticfauna.com/spidershoppe/blog.html.

All the best, Michael

Hi, I'm from San Antonio, TX and I was totally and pleasantly surprised by Arachno.con 2006. Having never handled any kind of crawly thing in my life, I took to tarantulas with a quickness. :) We attended on Saturday, July 15 and it was packed! Just blown away by the color, size and variety. I have caught tarantula fever.

My boyfriend and I purchased our first spider at the con, a Brachypelma smithi. We hustled her home and made a fast trip to Petco for a proper habitat and food (mealworms). Fortunately, I had purchased several good books on tarantula care in order to be prepared for an eventual purchase. The more we read up on tarantulas the more fascinating they get.

Currently our girl is settling in nicely and we have named her Madame Wong.

Here's hoping that San Antonio gets an arachno.con again next year!

I believe the number through the door besides conference attendees was around 600. It seemed many of them were there at about the same time...

As for pics, I'll post the 10 or so I took soon.

Susan and Tom,
Welcome to the ATS and Welcome to the hobby. B. smithi is a great spider and I'm sure you'll love her. As you've discovered, tarantulas can be quite addicting. Feel free to ask questions here. We're all to happy to help. I'm glad that you have purchased some books to further your knowledge, it is nice to see responsible T keepers. I hope that one of the books you purchased is the "Tarantula Keepers Guide" by Stanley Schultz. It is truely the best book available. (Man I wish I got paid every time I said that!)

Take care and welcome again!

Hi and thanks for the welcome! Yes indeed, we did purchase the the Schultz book and you are right its the best book out there. I am looking for a book that shows more pictures of T's to help identify and just for the sheer beauty of them, so if anyone can recommend somthing like that let me know.

Tom and I believe in responsible ownership and are committed to taking care of our T's. Next up, we want to join ATS to keep up with the latest in care and info.

Can you tell that I'm a feverish newbie? ha ha

Hi Susan from another Susan. I even used to be Susan G. since my maiden name is Glynn! LOL

My husband Mike and I were dragged kicking and screaming into the hobby by our daughter but we've both found tarantulas to be quite addictive! LOL The ATS is a great place to get information and I think you'll find spider people in general very quick to help out anyone new to the hobby. Perhaps it's because we don't have many people who will listen in the outside world! LOL

B. smithi is personally one of my favorite ts. I have one named Tequila Sunrise that my daughter gave to me from her collection. She's the only tarantula currently living in my bedroom, though I also keep a scorpion and a snake in there.

Anyway, I don't think you'll find another hobby that has so much potential for growth and the gaining of new knowledge! Welcome!

ACon was definitely a great time! I spent about 3 hours Saturday working the admissions table for the expo, and let me tell you.......the excitement from the attendees, particularly the children, was wonderful to see!

The total amount of walk-ins (i.e. non registered conference attendees) ended up being a little over 560 people! The Exo-Terra rep was extremely impressed, and all of the vendors were very very pleased.

My pics are already posted over on AB, but for those of you who don't wish to venture that far, here's a link for you all.

Here's hoping there will be another Arachno.con in San Antonio next year. I got a kick out of everyone's reaction and excitement to the whole tarantula experience. The Arachono.con definately sparked a new hobby interest for me.

There will be. Scott, Debby and I are taking a few weeks to chill after months of hard work, but before long the preparations for Arachnocon 2007 will begin. At this time, it is highly probable that it will be in the same facilities in San Antonio, but there is the possibility that it will move around some of the major cities in the southwest in future years.

All the best, Michael

A hearty welcome to Tom and SusanG. It's great to have both of you here. SusanG, it sounds like you have been bitten pretty hard!! We are looking forward to hearing from both of you. Please don't hesitate with any questions and don't be shy when it comes to sharing your experiences with your T's. Good luck!
