That is a female.
The flap that I circled for you in the photo is the spermathecae that only females have.

Yep, I saw it, but I just need another opinion, because I want it to be a female and the skin is in a really bad condition.
Thank you for your reply! :)

Please help me sex this!
I want to believe it's a female but I'm not so sure.
Sorry for the bad quality.
Thanks :)

Hi guys. I'm new to the spider world, and this thread has been quite helpful, so thanks! I believe my Gramastola rosea is a male, but I could really use a second opinion. Could I post it here so others can confirm, or is there a different thread for that sort of thing? Santiago is my first spider, and the only one I've attempted to sex. ; ) I bought him at Petco...no idea what his age might be...

Thanks!

Jeni,

Since you're new, and probably going to get lots of answers and all that fun stuff, I'd start a new thread. Welcome to the discussion board.

Christian

Another clue is the difference in spacing of the book lungs. I believe females are nearer to each other than males. If you compare your pics the left one seems to have wider spacing between the bottom set of book lungs. Since there is a significant size difference in the spiders this may not be a good tool to use.

There are a lot of similarities in these two T's and I'm thinking they may both be females. The one on the right is older and the physical characteristics we look for are much more developed. When you compare them to each other it's hard to say one is a boy and the other a girl.

Do you know the sex of either?

The sizes of both spiders are absolutely the same about 2.5 inches. I don't know the sex of either of them.
Because of the same size I think #2 is a female, it looks to me a female more then #1?!
I've got them when they were spiderlings, but I dont have their skins, because each time they molt in their burrows.

Thanks for your help and reply!
The truth is out there :) and it will become clear after 2 or 3 molts for sure, if I manage to find their skins.

Thanks, Patrick. I was leaning that direction, too. Hopefully I can get to the next exuvium before it destroys it...

Here is the sac mate, not as cooperative as its sibling. I've been pouring over ventral sexing threads and I just don't seem to get it... These two should be big enough to sex by their molts. Hopefully I can salvage the next ones and send them to someone who has a better clue than I. Though if I can discern spermathacae on either of them... :D

Joyce, I just don't get the ventral sexing thing either. They pretty much all look alike to me and if they do look different, I don't know which is which. IMO molt sexing is lot easier and of course reliable. When you are at ATS in Tucson, there is usually a sexing area set up. One of us can show you just what to look for. Patrick showed me how to look for and recognize the uterine flap and since then I got pretty good at it.

Bring all the molts you want to the conference Joyce. We'll have a microscope set up and someone should be able to help you. There's a picture around here of my youngest daughter Megan sitting in a hotel bathroom with a microscope sexing molts at the 2007 ATS Conference.
