One of the students here at MTSU brought me a spider that apparently came in with a shipment of bananas from Guatemala. (Her boyfriend works at a local grocery store and found it in with some bananas that were labeled from Guatemala.)

I got some photos (of varying quality), so I figured I'd put them up here and see if anyone had any idea of what it might be...

I'm looking at some pictures of C. salei, and it does look pretty similar. But the chelicerae appear to be larger and "furrier" (nice technical term, eh?) on C. salei than on this spider. Also, I don't see any of that bright red color.

Just out of curiosity, is C. salei dangerous to humans? (I'm sorry... I'm a scorpion guy - don't know a whole lot about these little buggers.) :p

Just stumbled across this very old thread, which doesn't appear to have resolution.

Everything indicates it was a juvenile of the harmless Cupiennius chiapanensis, which range at least in Southern Chiapas Mexico (where described from) and into Guatemala.

I'm just posting here to help anyone who comes across another such thing in cargo. And no, none of the Cupiennius spp. are dangerous, although below some confusion with Phoneutria - if you don't know what it is, best not to hold it like in the photos! That said, having a ventral photo of the abdomen can be greatly helpful to working out identity - but the underside (ventral view) can be photographed through a clear cup or bag.
