Hi,

I was going through some of my photos last night and came across this scorpion shot. I'd like to get an identification on it if possible. The scorpion came from coastal Santa Barbara County in California.

Thanks!

I'm thinking Vaejovis puritanus, I'm about 90% certain of that.

Thanks for the ID! Everything I could find confirms it. This is the first / only one of these I've ever found in Santa Barbara County. Most of the text I've found puts them further south, but there doesn't seem to be anything definative on range that I could find.

Good observation, Alice. It could very well be a new record of a very widespread species (puritanus) or a new related species. I think Rasputin has a good handle on it.

Any chance you still have this scorpion, or at least its locality info so someone can collect more to find out what it is?

Kari,

I'm afraid I didn't keep this one, I can provide locality info if needed (if you'd like I can send you coordinates on Monday). I've spent a fair amount of time a lot of time in the area I found the scorpion in and this is the only one I've ever seen like it. If I find another, I'll hold on to it.
