Found a bunch of these guys (Danaus plexippus) munching on a morning glory vine:

You might have noticed the stems are bent... chunkers too heavy???
And just for fun an early stage Monarch chrysalis from the same area:

There is a lot of milkweed in the area, but for the last couple of years, the milkweed in the area has been dominated by huge numbers of Milkweed Tiger Moth caterpillars (Euchaetes egle):

Now, morning glory is not in the milkweed family, correct? What gives? Anybody else see them feeding on morning glory?

Nice pics LHP! I found a few of those too the other day, but Ive yet to see a chrysalis though... Id like to try my hand at raising some in the future, but theyd probably eat me out of house and home.

LHP you are quite the photographer. What are you using and how are you setting up your close up shots?

Thanks! I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 (it's a few years old now). I'm lucky enough to work at a nature center, so I'm outside a lot and get to fiddle with my camera and bugs pretty often:) . I typically use the manual macro setting and change settings as I go. Thank goodness for digital! If I experimented so much with a film camera I'd go broke!

Hey..... Is that Oobi (sp?) in your avatar?!? Either way, I've got that song in my head now. Great.

See ya,
Lindsey

Hey all,
I realize that this post is several years old:)
Recently, however, I was faced with the same conundrum.
I located and photographed a hatching of Milkweed Tiger Moth (E. egle) larvae on what I thought to be a Morning Glory vine (Ipomoea sp.) Now both the Tiger Moths and the Monarchs are known to feed primarily on plants in the Asclepia group, so I was just as puzzled as the original poster here. But if you look closely at your photographs, you can see that the leaves are attached opposing one another, unlike Ipomoea species whos leaves are alternate! I didn't notice this until I looked closely at these photos and then compaired them with mine- We both found caterpillars feeding on Matelea sp., probably M. carolinensis... also known as Milkvine!Image
Anywho- thought Id share some successful sleuthing...made my day at least.

Both plants are packed with alkaloids and in the same plant family the Apocynaceae, this genus is just next door to the milkweeds. Very cool observations indeed. Welcome to the ATS discussion board!
