Good question. I looked at the online tutorials detailing how others have done this and while there are a great ways of accurately sexing them without seeing a molt, all involved knocking the animals out and putting your hands in a precarious position on an animal that may not be too happy when it awakes. Since they're both so large, (pushing 11" reliably - I have them photographed on a ruler) I used the secondary sexual characters on this species. The females tend to be much bulkier than the males. I supervised the pairing as I do with the other inverts and the reactions were typical of mixed genders. Not all that accurate, but can be useful when you don't feel like throwing your 'pedes in the fridge.

I remember a talk by Von Wirth on using CO2 to put them out. He said they give you one twitch, and then they're moving at full speed. I laughed along with the audience, but now that I've seen a few really up close, and a few bite reports... well I'm still laughing. Although I do fully support using your brain instead of your fingers to sex these.

I hope you succeed...it would probably be the first captive breeding in the US of this species wouldn't it?

I'm not sure to be honest. I have seen some videos of 'pedes mating on youtube, but I'm not sure if those resulted in offspring or if the keepers were in the states.

I know that they've been bred in Europe a few times, and I think most of the ones offered here are imported from there and appear only very sporatically and at very high prices. You'll do well with them if you get babies!
